AWUGU: iOS 14 & iPadOS 14 Changes

by Tom Piper, Coordinator

Our eighth Apple World User Group University online gathering of Apple user group leaders was held at 8:00pm CST, on October 19, 2020, via Zoom. We had 17 participants who joined for the topic of “iOS 14 & iPadOS 14 Changes” . The 93-minute video can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/ZRC0NENsNh0 (unlisted on YouTube).

This session opened with a welcome, plus my description of comparison of changes between iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. I also introduced Doug Smith, Chair of the Apple User Group Advisory Board, who monitored the Chat Room and Zoom support.

Our evening presenter provided a detailed presentation by Tony Crawford of The Villages Apple User Group (tvaug.org) about iOS 14 as taken from Apple’s webpage, (apple.com/ios/ios-14). This was followed by Mike Kwasniak of the Suffolk Mac User Group (www.suffolkmug.co.uk) about their transition to groups.io. This was followed by a presentation by George Rubin and Eckart Goette of Naples Mac User Group (naplesmug.com) about the potential for an NMUG associate or full membership for other user groups and members.

A number of questions, answers and discussion followed with these links provided as followup:

from Ann MacKay: link their leaders used for 14 iOS 14 features:

from Rick Matteson: Logitech has a stylus called “Crayon

which is compatible with all iPads 2018 and later ($69.99):

An extensive discussion was held about suggestions for future meeting topics such as moving to every-other-month meetings, membership records and renewals, sharing presenters & presentations, joint user group meetings, and pro apps for Zoom. The new AWUGU iCloud resource area to share past meeting information is available (https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/0kF7XwYI98VG0fqvL86PJm02g#AWUGU) hosted by the Apple User Group Advisory Board.

We are very pleased that this eighth meeting was very informative. Our next tentative meeting is scheduled for 8:00pm CDT, November 16, 2020, about “Membership Records and Renewals”, and no meeting in December.  All AWUGU previous registrants will receive an invitation to all meetings.

To become a participant, any interested AUG leader must first register with the AWUGU Coordinator by emailing their name, location, and user group name and web link to macquest@mac.com. Registration must be received by November 14 in order to receive a Zoom Meeting invitation (a download of the free Zoom app in advance is also necessary).

AppleTV+, FYC, and Deadline – For the Love of DOCS

User group members are known for their varied interests and a new collaboration between Deadline, FYC (For your Consideration), and AppleTV+ might make for a great meeting topic. FYC is known for providing Non-Academy events presented on behalf of a television show that may be considered for an Emmy or other award, and, as you might expect, they have not been able to do live events. The good news is that Deadline’s For the Love of DOCS documentary series is being offered online and free of charge. From this week through mid-December documentaries ranging from a look at how shooting stars, meteorites and deep impacts have focused the human imagination on other realms and worlds, and on our past and our future, to a cinematic exploration of punk poet Shane MacGowan, to human stories from the center of the pandemic, a look at the House of Gucci, a social justice scout troop, a high school senior who cares for her two mentally disabled parents, and more.

How To: User Group Ambassador

Does your group have an Apple User Group Ambassador? Not sure or maybe your group needs to update its information or assign a new ambassador. If any of this applies to your group, or you are a current ambassador and want to refresh on what resources are available, then read on.

What is an Apple User Group Ambassador?
Apple User Group Ambassador is the role assigned to one individual from each recognized Apple User Group in the Apple User Group Locator (database). Leaders from each user group choose a member from their group who will serve in this role. The Ambassador for the group serves as the link and primary contact to the Apple User Group program.
