MacinTech of South Denver has a great addition for any user group meeting: Show and Tell with a bit of a twist. It’s fun to see a professional demonstration of a high-end piece of software or hardware, but most users have limited funds and new technology can be pricy. For MacinTech’s Show and Tell, members are encouraged to bring in software and accessories for member discussion, but the items must meet two criteria: the item must be useful and the item must be reasonably priced. From a favorite utility for a Mac to a note taking application for an iPod, members get a chance to see how items work in the real world. Better yet, the items discussed are affordable. What a fun addition to any user group meeting.

The officers and members of North Coast Mac (NCMUG) often lead the way when it comes to community service and their newest program is no exception. The group is collecting ink and toner cartridges (at meetings) in support of Operation Goals, a non-profit started in 2012 by three teenagers who saw a need and wanted to help. The money that Operation Goals receives from recycling goes to buy educational supplies for foster teens in their community. Keeping cartridges and toners out of landfills, helping foster teens and encouraging localyouth with a passion for community service: Way to go North Coast Mac!

The Media Motion Ball is run by an all-volunteer team that started from a combination of two user group lists: the International Media Users Group (IMUG) email list and the After Effects email list. The result, first held in 1998, was an event planned by users, for users. Since then there has been no looking back! This year the volunteer team once again invites digital media mavens to their premier event during NAB. Who should attend? Professionals in production, post production, motion graphics, 3D and related fields. This year’s Media Motion Ball 2013, with Platinum Sponsor AJA Video Systems, will offer ongoing drawings for great door prizes, time to network and socialize, and a wonderful dinner. Interested in media production? Going to NAB? The MediaMotion Ball should be on your social calendar.
Be there.

Many groups face an audience problem: how to meet the needs of new users, consumer product enthusiasts and technology professionals, so that each meeting is a special event for all attendees. Some resolve the problem by having an initial Q & A for new users or switchers. Some resolve the problem by moving all but the most mainstream topics to SIGs. On February 26, iMUG of Melbourne tackles two topics that are of interest to diverse audience members, covering the use of iPads for special needs children and FileMaker Pro’s ability to create and view stunning databases for the web, Mac, iPhone and iPad. Michael Ward, member of the FileMaker Solutions Alliance, and Jane Farrell, speech pathologist and special educator with 20 years experience in the field, will be the presenters.
